August 2024

Project Conception

Initial research into leveraging open-source AI for police accountability began, forming the foundational ideas for OpenBWC.

November 2024

Team Formation

An interdisciplinary team of ML, Criminology, and NLP researchers was assembled to tackle the project's complex challenges.

February 2025

Prototype Development

Began development of the core analysis engine, focusing on computer vision models for object and behavior detection.

May 2025

Data Partnership

Secured first partnership for anonymized BWC footage, enabling real-world testing and model refinement.

August 2025

Public Launch

Launched the OpenBWC website and initial open-source code repositories to engage the wider community.
